Practical Matters

Practical details about fees, hours, and policies - know what to expect before beginning.

  • Who I Work With

Individual adults, online, across Ontario and BC who want to do deep, meaningful work from the comfort and privacy of their own space.

This work is not designed for crisis intervention, brief symptom management, or specific goal-oriented problem-solving. While skills are developed through the process, it is best suited for those seeking to understand patterns, relational dynamics, and the deeper roots of their experience over time.

  • Introductory Consultation

Before beginning treatment, we will meet for a complimentary introductory consultation (30–50 minutes, by video call).

This is a mutual fit-check: an opportunity to learn about each other, ask questions, and decide whether this is the right match for your needs. No treatment decisions are made at this stage.

24 hours' notice is requested to cancel or reschedule.

  • Fees Structure

Since people have different financial situations, fees follow a sliding scale, based on household income / ability to pay:

    • $ 175 (income > ~ $80k)
    • $ 150 (income between ~ $50 - 80k)
    • $ 125 (income < ~ $50k)

Income is self-reported. Ranges are guidelines; if you're near a boundary, we'll discuss what works during your introductory consultation.

*All fees are HST-exempt. See Insurance Coverage for details.

  • Hours, Frequency, and Duration

    Hours:

    Monday through Friday, 12–8pm ET.

    Frequency:

I meet with people weekly and biweekly. To start with, I usually recommend weekly. Once we've established some groundwork and found a rhythm, we can better assess what frequency works best for you.

    Duration:

Psychodynamic (depth-oriented) therapy is longer-term work. Meaningful change often begins to emerge around six months, though many people find value in continuing well beyond that. There is no fixed endpoint, nor obligation to continue.

  • Telehealth Format

Online therapy sessions are conducted via secure PHIPA and PIPEDA compliant video (or audio only) with clients physically located in Ontario or British Columbia.

Ontario Clients: Services are covered by most extended health plans for Registered Psychotherapists.

BC Clients: Services are currently provided under Ontario regulation. Please verify insurance coverage for out-of-province providers. Regulation in BC commences November 29, 2027.

Since this practice is online-only, emergency interventions are limited. In a crisis, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

*Note on other provinces: Psychotherapy is regulated at the provincial and territorial level, and not all jurisdictions currently regulate the profession. Each jurisdiction sets its own rules regarding who may provide services to its residents. Clients located in other provinces may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the time of inquiry.

  • Method of Payment

    Payment methods accepted include:

Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and e-transfer (email to: therapy@fiveseas.ca)

  • Insurance Coverage

Psychotherapy services provided by private practitioners are not covered by OHIP or other equivalent provincial health care plans, which generally only cover services rendered by physicians (such as psychiatrists) or hospital-based programs. However, most extended health benefit plans in Ontario include coverage for services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP).

Clients are encouraged to verify their specific policy details to confirm that "Registered Psychotherapist" is an eligible provider category under their plan, as coverage limits and reimbursement rates vary. No physician referral is required to access RP services in Ontario.

Direct billing is available through Greenshield and companies under Telus Health (CanadaLife, Manulife, and more). For all other providers, detailed receipts will be issued after each session to facilitate insurance claims. These receipts include all necessary information for reimbursement, including the clinician’s name, CRPO registration number, session date, duration, service description, and fee paid.

*Important Note: As of June 20, 2024, psychotherapy services provided by Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario are exempt from the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). No tax will be added to your session fee.

  • Cancellation Policy

24 hours notice is required to cancel or reschedule. The full session fee applies to late cancellations and no-shows.

  • Confidentiality

Your personal health information is protected under the CRPO Code of Ethics and applicable provincial privacy legislation — British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, for clients located in Ontario, Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA).

Information shared in sessions will not be disclosed without your written consent, except in the limited circumstances described below. Your records are stored in a secure, encrypted electronic system. You have the right to request access to, or correction of, your records.

Full details on record retention, access requests, and the CRPO complaint process are provided in your treatment consent prior to the start of therapy.

  • Limits of Confidentiality

There are a small number of circumstances in which disclosure may be required or permitted without your consent, including:

    • Significant, imminent risk of serious harm to you or another person
    • Suspected child or youth protection concerns
    • Disclosure of sexual abuse by a regulated health professional
    • Legal proceedings (e.g., subpoena)
    • You are incapacitated and a substitute decision-maker or emergency contact needs to be reached.

*Note: It may be important to consider these limitations before deciding what to share.

The full list of exceptions, with additional context, is provided in your treatment consent prior to the start of therapy.

Good to Know (FAQs)

  • Is therapy covered by my health insurance?

Provincial health plans (OHIP, MSP-BC, etc.) don't cover private-practice Registered Psychotherapists. However, most extended health plans do cover RPs. A detailed receipt with session info and my license number is provided after each session for insurance reimbursement.

  • How much does therapy cost?

This practice uses a structured sliding scale. Sessions are $125, $150, or $175 per 50-minute session, based on household income / ability to pay.  Lower-fee slots are limited in number.  Your specific rate is established during the introductory consultation. All fees are HST-exempt.

  • Is there a free consultation?

Yes. Before committing to anything, we'll have a free (30-50min) introductory consult. It gives you a chance to ask about how I work and helps me understand what's brought you here. Mostly, it's a chance for both of us to have a conversation and get a sense of whether this feels like a good fit. This is an important step because this relationship is integral to the therapeutic process.

There's no need to arrive with a clear story or the right words... it's about testing the waters.

  • How do I get started?

Reach out by email. You don't need to have the right words, a simple "I'm interested" is enough to begin.
